James Smith Talk- Photography Course Leader at BA Norwich University of Arts.



James Smith is one of the Course leaders from the Photography department at Norwich University of Arts, he came and talk to us a little bit more about the course, shown students works,  comparing the first year with the second and third. He spoke about his own experience and what the photography world is like, also he spoke about how good the University is and what it offers to all the new students, each years.
Every single year the students, get the opportunity of meeting Photographers, exhibit their work, have different workshops to improve their skills, competitions, and at the end of the course 80% of the students have a guaranteed work experience, or jobs with famous companies and Photographers, to then gain even more experience.

At the BA Norwich University of Arts, they have a special department just for Photography, where only Photography students and teachers can go to.
In this building they have a DIGITAL DARKROOM:



  •  24 apple macs workstations
  • Industry standard and colour calibrated. 
  • Software includes Aperture, Capture One and Adobe Creative Suite, Date projection is installed for reviewing and critiquing work, high quality flat bed transparency/ reflective scanners are installed,as well as a photographic quality inkjet printer. 
It has a BLACK STUDIO, as it is a listed building, they put a black tent in there because the society of listed buildings, wouldn't aloud them to paint it black.
There is also a WHITE STUDIO, which has HMI lighting which is usually used for the film industry.

SKILL SET:
Three key themes with significant implications for knowledge and skills development in the photo imaging industry.
These relate to general business skills sector specialist skills and the relationship between industry and education.
The students at this course, go ask employers and other people who work in the photography area, what skills and techniques do they need to be a successful photographer.

Photography is not just focused on technical practice, but to the photographer's identity and what he loves.

James Smith, is focused on landscapes, he admits that he's work is not the BEST, but that's what he likes doing.

Part time Photographers that work within the University are: Richard Drury, Andi Sapey, and Debby Besford.

Juneko Haga, lecturer, Japanese, different thoughts, works. First year tutor.
Matt Cooke, lecturer, interested in old cars, 50's.
James Cant and Daniel Bosworth are Par time lecturers, Daniel is a editorial photographer and both have been in the Photography are over 15 years.
  • AOP & INDUSTRY:
The course is recognised by the Association of Photographers (AOP). In addition the students benefit from, regular industry guest lectures and workshops. Recent guest lectures have included NUA Visiting Professor ANDY EARL, editorial photographer  TOM MILES, travel photographer PHILIP LEE HARVEY and President of the AOP, SIMON LEACH.
Study visits to UK Galleries such as Tate Modern and field trips to cities such as Berlin and Prague enable students to deepen their understanding of the place of photography in contemporary society.



  • Andy Earl:  Famous photographer, who's work is diverse,often incorporating dramatic natural backdrops and architectural elements to create a surrealistic effect. Back in the day he used to take pictures of women naked, and once he got in trouble with the law because he took a picture of a young teenager with two guys next to her and he became famous because of this.

  • Tim Flach:  Tim born in London 1958, a Photographer obsessed with his career and animals.He has books published with photos of animals and because of that he earned millions and millions he's a millionaire but he has no life, i mean by that , he doesn't go out at all, that is why too he is a millionaire, he spent all of his life working hard, as a award he has loads of money,for his dedication.

  • Lottie Davies: Lottie Davies was born in Guildford ,UK, in 1971. This photographer works commercially, an advertiser, travel photographer. 



  • Tom Miles:  Tom Miles graduated with James Smith. Tom miles when move to London after the University was hard to find a job, at the first year he earned two to four thousand pounds,which is nothing to live in a place, such as London. He has he's own studio now.



  • Tara Moore: Advertising photographer, worked with Andy Earl for eight years as a work experience.

  • Simon Leach: Simon was the weird "kid" when he was young, quiet, nerdy, but a photographer who succeeded loads in life. Simon Leach is a leading photographer offering a bespoke service devoted to creating beautiful and effective images. Simon's diverse, compelling portfolio displays the breadth of his experience and his varied client base.
  • Carol Sharp: Food and Flower Photographer. Carol Sharp has been a successful  Professional Photographer for over 20 years.She is renowned for her intuitive composition, her meticulous attention to detail and her delicate touch with light.
Students had work experiences with Nick Knight and Tim Flach.
 
Some other students, when they left university they went to work with famous Photographers.
