Summer Work - Public Art

It's summer time, time to go relax, and have fun with friends and somewhere else.
So i came on holiday to my country to visit family and friends and obviously the beautiful weather too, but just because i am on holidays, it doesn't mean i can run away from the Homework.

The Summer Homework for Public art was to select three "Public Art" pieces and put together a double page per piece, that includes the following in our Public Art sketchbooks:

  • Name of the Artist/ Designer
  • Year the pieces were made
  • Location of piece can include Photographs/ Drawings/ Descriptions.
  • Materials
We were asked to VISIT the Location of the pieces to collect Visual Evidence, drawings, photographs, notes, interview local residents on their views etc. Expected outcomes - three double pages, one per Public Art Piece in our sketchbooks.

When i got to Portugal, i live in a city which is like 20 minutes away from Lisbon by boat, because city is the main City i thought it would be easy to find any Public Art piece to do my summer work, and at the same time i was discovering a bit more about lisbon.

Around Lisbon

Lisbon is the capital and largest city of Portugal with a population of 547,631 within its administrative limits on a land area of 84.8 km2 (33 sq mi). The urban area of Lisbon extends beyond the administrative city limits with a population of over 3 million on an area of 958 km2 (370 sq mi), making it the 11th most populous urban area  in the European Union. About 3,035,000 people live in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (which represents approximately 27% of the population of the country). Lisbon is the westernmost large city located in Europe, as well as its westernmost capital city and the only one along the Atlantic coast. It lies in the western Iberian Peninsula on the Atlantic Ocean and the RiverTagus.

I looked around Lisbon  spent all day in there, it was fantastic, i knew my country was amazing but never thought that there was castle's and churches, historical places, really old places but very beautiful.
We, Portuguese people, we are very Religious, we believe in good and we're all Catholic, i went into to that Church at the very top, i always wanted to go there, because it's really famous and is always on tv's around the Country.
The Church was just so Beautiful, the atmosphere was really good, some people praying, others going around , the Church is really big, what i liked the most was that Jesus Presence's feeling, was very relaxing, i took some pictures around, and there was some candles on, that different people payed 40 centimes for the candle, then once the candle was on, people had to pray something, so i did it.
Then when i left the Church, i went up to "Sao Jorge's" Castle, which is at the very top in Lisbon, in a hot day, i was boiling but when i got there, it was just worth going there. Afterwords, i went to have lunch and i went around Lisbon again, looking for the Public art pieces.

Also i found some Classic Fountains on the way, which i took picture of, so it could go on the Public Art Unit, too. I had the opportunity to take pictures and find out more about the Portuguese Religion, to use for my final idea for the unit 75.

First Public Art Piece :

  • Artist: Pedro Pires
  • Title: "Homem de Muralha" - Human Wall
  • Created in 2008
The Art piece is situated right in the middle of Lisbon, the famous bridge of Lisbon "Vasco da Gama" on the back. The piece is at the known "Parque das Nacoes" former Expo, 98 grounds.
Five mans, all facing different directions, the sculptures are made of metal little squares.
I found this interesting Public Art work, after the meal i had at the Shopping center "Vasco da Gama" which is just ten minutes away from it.
In my sketchbook i got Visual evidence, like photographs, euros, my easy jet ticket, bus tickets in lisbon and boat ticket.

Second Public Art Piece:

  •  Artist: Jorge Vieira
  • Title: "Homem Sol" - Sun Man
  • Created in 1998, this Sculpture is also situated at "Parque das Nacoes" but i a little bit more further, than the first Sculpture.
The Artist got inspired by the sun, each pointy side of the Sculpture represents a planet, and the very top one represents the Sun, which is the biggest planet and is in the middle of the small one. But it ends up, making it look like a man, its legs, arms and head. The artist thought carefully about this idea, so it ended up transmitting one idea in two. Made out of, real metal and it is 20 meters high.

The Picture was taken at night time, because time runned out it was late afternoon and suddenly went dark, when i was going to have dinner i saw the sculpture, which i took picture of, because i really like the shapes of it and they real idea of it.

Third Public Art Piece:

  • Artist: Hans Varela
  • Created on 29th August, 2009
  • Made out of rock and metal
The Public Art Piece, is situated at another city which isn't Lisbon, but it is called Sesimbra.
This is my favorite Art Piece, out of the other two, i wasn't expecting to find it, i went and visit some family at night time at this city and occasionally when i got off the car i saw the sculpture.
i like how the artist decided to create a face in that city, may represent the citizens , then the left side is braking apart but there's metal crossing each other on the top.

I enjoyed this experience, i had the chance to do my homework task in another country, where are different artists, they're work is different, in the way they present work, and i can present a different work too, done outside England.
